CENTRE FOR ENVIRONMENTAL LAW, EDUCATION, RESEARCH AND ADVOCACY (CEERA)
With the object of consolidating the existing efforts on and pay focused attention to the ever evolving frontier area of environmental law, CEERA was brought into existence in the academic year 1997-98. This Centre for Excellence in Environmental Law signifies the second phase of evolution of the NLSIU.
ENVIRONMENTAL LAW CONSULTANCY SERVICES IN CEERA
Teaching and Research : Teaching has acquired a new meaning at CEERA. Being interactive and inter disciplinary in nature, the teaching here offers abundant scope for participatory learning. A foundation course in environmental law; optional seminar courses in Natural Resources and Energy Law and International Environmental Law and an optional clinical course in Environmental Advocacy, for the the students of B.A. LL.B. (Hons) is offered. At the Post-Graduate level specialization in Environmental Law is offered to students. A course in Environmental Law has been specially designed for the students of the Distance Education programme in Master of Business Laws. In order to meet the increasing demand for Environmental Law education, CEERA also offers a One Year Post-Graduate Diploma in Environmental Law. A number of doctoral research works are being carried out at the centre as also field-oriented research work, in different parts of India.
Training and Advocacy: As an on going process, teaching, training and capacity building in Environmental Law, is being offered to, the managers of environment in India. Government Functionaries, Industrial Managers, Judges, Law Practitioners, NG0s, representatives of local selfgovernment, besides others are availing this facility of the Centre. Organisation of seminars and workshops on different thrust areas of environmental law all round the year, are a part of the activities of the Centre. The outcome of the deliberations that are published have richly contributed to the corpus of Environmental Jurisprudence in India. These are being made use of as policy papers and basic reading materials on the subject.
Publications : CEERA comes out regularly with a quarterly News Letter and a number of Research Publication every year. Some of its other major publications are:

Environmental Law Consultancy Services in CEERA is an attempt to meet the long-standing need of different actors involved in environmental management in India. Under this programme, legal advice is being regularly tendered to the governmental agencies involved at different levels of policy making and implementation in environmental law.
1. Asian Development Bank assisted, Development project for 10 Coastal districts of Karnataka: Consultancy service for group of 45 NGOs.
2. Drafting of Bill on constitution of River Bed authority in Karnataka: Consultancy service for Ministry of Major Irrigation Government of Karnataka.
Projects : The Centre has completed a "Environment Management Capacity Building Project (Law Component)" on behalf of the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India. This project spread over for the period of five years and assisted by the World Bank, the project produced competent leaders to manage the destiny of India's environment. It has also completed short assignment for Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research, Mumbai on "Review and Reform of Indian Environmental Law" as part of an UNDP Project and Sujala Water Shed Project for Government of Karnataka. Working in close co-operation with UNEP, UNITAR, IUCN and APCEL, the Centre, with its rich resource base and documentation, is poised to blossom into an Environmental Law Academy for the entire SAARC Region, in the years to come. Centre has assigned with other number of projects like Environmental Information System(ENVIS)Project under Ministry of Environment and Forests, SDNP-ENVIS Project under ICEF small grant commission under this project centre has developed two websites www.nlsenlaw.org (on environmental issues) www.nlsenlaw.org/newenvis on trade and environment issues.
Case studies: CEERA has constituted number of case studies based on Doctrinal Legal Research, based on empherical data. The main objective of the case studies is to systametically analyse and understand the Environmental problems in various regions of the country and to find adequate legal solutions. The case studies will add legal value and help in the creation of new knowledge, while dealing with hotspot problem solving. The case studies constituted are on the following areas.

3. Lake degradation in Bangalore
4. Documentation of Self Imposed Rules in Uttraranchal
5. River Pollution in Tunga and Bhadra

THE NATIONAL LAW SCHOOL OF INDIA UNIVERSITY (NLSIU) is one of the premier institutions for higher education in law. Sponsored by the Bar Council of India to achieve excellence in professional legal education, NLSIU is the only Law University in the country established under the National Law School of India Act 1986. The CEERA Team, that is maintaining the Webpage, is a young team of legal and technical professionals working, literally round the clock, to make a positive difference to the current state of environmental law in the country. The team comprises of;

O.V.Nandimath: Associate Professor, NLSIU specialized in Commercial Law, Consumer Law, Environment and Public Safety, Disaster Management Law, Chevening Scholar (2001) and currently engaged in coordinating and executing the World Bank supported, Government of India project on Strengthening the Legal Capacity of Environmental Managers in India.(Legal Component)
2. Ms. Sumitha Rao, Research Officer, CEERA specialized in Constitutional Law, International Law, Environmental Law. Her research interests include Pollution Control Laws and Land related Laws.
3. Ms. Pushpa Kadam: Library and Documentation Officer, CEERA, is a Master of Library and Information Science.
