SALEM: District administration would initiate legal action against those responsible for immersing idols made of Plaster of Paris and coloured /polished with paints, varnish, distemper and/or chemical powders, in water sources during Vinayagar Chuthurthi celebrations.

In a press release, the administration said that immersion of such idols in water sources was causing serious damage to the environment. The administration also advised people to use idols made of clay for immersion as they were environmentally safe.

Water bodies

People would be allowed to immerse idols in the following water bodies and rivers in the district: Ammapet Lake, Seelanaickanpatti Lake, Mookaneri and Cauvery River at Poolampatti and Mettur.

Salem district administration appealed to people to follow the guidelines properly and protect the environment.
